Morning sports update: Phil Mickelson on why he’s ‘inspired’ by Tom Brady
"I want to partner with him again in a match and win."
The Bruins eliminated Zdeno Chara and the Capitals from the playoffs on Sunday with a 3-1 victory in Game 5 to win the best-of-seven first-round series, 4-1.
In the next round — in accordance with state guidelines — TD Garden will be permitted to return to “near full capacity,” according to a team announcement. The Bruins will play either the Islanders or the Penguins (the two teams’ series is currently tied at 2-2).
Also on Sunday, the Red Sox lost to the Phillies, 6-2.
The Celtics face the Nets in Game 2 on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Brooklyn leads the series 1-0.

Phil Mickelson’s thoughts on Tom Brady as an inspiration: Cheered by a crowd of thousands, Phil Mickelson rolled in the final put on Sunday to win the PGA Championship.
In doing so, Mickelson, 50, became the oldest winner in major championship history.
In the aftermath of his historic win, Mickelson was asked about another athlete who continues to win even at an older age: Tom Brady.
Brady and Mickelson have ties, having played together in charitable competition against Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods in 2020. And the 43-year-old Brady — who recently won his seventh Super Bowl — was among those cheering for Mickelson on Sunday.
Mickelson discussed Brady in an interview on Sunday with ESPN’s Gene Wojciechowski.

“So I’m very inspired by Tom Brady,” Mickelson explained. “He is actually a big motivation, because of how hard he works to be the best and to elongate his career.”
“We have some unfinished business,” Mickelson added. “I want to partner with him again in a match and win.”
“I want to do another match with him because spending time with him, it’s inspiring, but also I learn a lot.”

On this day: In 1988, Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Bruins and Oilers was suddenly thrown into darkness after an “ancient transformer malfunctioned.”
With Edmonton up 3-0 in the series, and having just tied the game in the second period at 3-3, the unprecedented blackout granted Boston a temporary reprieve.
Unusual conditions were already prevalent, as a higher level of humidity inside the arena caused fog to form above the ice. But after the Boston Garden lost power, officials were able to only restore emergency backup lights (allowing fans to leave). The game was suspended, and would’ve been replayed at the end of the series had it been necessary.

Unfortunately for the Bruins, the Oilers wasted no time when the series returned to Edmonton for Game 5. A 6-3 win in what would be Wayne Gretzky’s final game as an Oiler sealed yet another title.
