Morning sports update: Buccaneers GM Jason Licht said extending Tom Brady until age 45 is a ‘possibility’

The Celtics were unable to complete a fourth quarter comeback against the Mavericks on Tuesday, losing on a last-second 3-pointer from Luka Doncic, 110-107.

The loss drops Boston below .500. Yet given the busy nature of the NBA schedule, the Celtics will be right back in action tonight against the Hawks at 7:30 p.m.

The sports world held its collective breath after news emerged on Tuesday that Tiger Woods had been rushed to the hospital following a single-car accident. Woods’s vehicle crashed through the median of a downhill stretch of road in California as he was heading to a television shoot before rolling onto its side.

The 45-year-old suffered “significant” injuries to his right leg, requiring immediate surgery. He was reportedly awake and responsive following the surgery.

The possibility of Tom Brady getting a contract extension: At 43 years of age, Tom Brady is already defying what was believed to be possible for a quarterback in the NFL. Having just won his seventh Super Bowl, Brady is clearly still capable of playing at the highest level.

That said, the Buccaneers’ recent Super Bowl win was at least partly a product of having an overwhelming amount of talent on the team’s roster. With the onset of the offseason, Tampa Bay now has to confront several questions over free agents.

The team’s cap space could theoretically increase if Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht was able to sign Brady to a contract extension. Still, agreeing to a contract extension with a 43-year-old quarterback would appear foolish. But with Brady — and his historic longevity — it’s apparently on the table, as Licht confirmed in an interview with radio host Rich Eisen.

“It’s a possibility,” Licht said of a Brady extension. “He certainly didn’t look like he slowed down any this year.”

“We’ll have to see how that goes,” added the Tampa Bay executive.

Asked if he had spoken with Brady about a contract extension, Licht avoided a direct answer.

“I talk to Tom often, but I’ll probably keep that under wraps, for now,” Licht explained. “Like I said, I know that it appears he really had a good time this year winning the Super Bowl, and likes our organization, likes our coaches, like our head coach, ownership. And we certainly love him, so usually when when you have those two things going for each other, it’s a match made in heaven. We’d like to keep this going.”

According to Spotrac, an extension for Brady could potentially open up $10 million in cap space for the Buccaneers. It would keep Brady under contract until he was 45, the age that the longtime quarterback has said he’d like to play at least up to in the past.

Boston College’s vertical offense: Boston College’s women’s lacrosse team got the 2021 season off to a winning start on Tuesday, defeating the University of Albany, 22-12. Goalkeeper Rachel Hall found Charlotte North on a perfectly thrown 50-yard pass before North finished the play by scoring.

On this day: In 1980, the United States men’s hockey team completed its “miracle” at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics, defeating Finland 4-2 to clinch the gold medal. The Americans, barely 48 hours after stunning the Soviet Union 4-3, trailed the Fins 2-1 heading into the third period.

U.S. coach Herb Brooks motivated his players with an unsparing declaration between periods.

“If you lose this game, you’ll take it to your grave,” Brooks told his players before turning and repeating the phrase with an added expletive for emphasis.

The U.S. team, composed entirely of amateurs, rose to the challenge, scoring three unanswered goals to complete their inspiring journey.

Having trailed in every game except one, the Americans finished the Games with six wins and a draw. It was the first time since the Soviet Union began participating in Olympic hockey (in 1956) that they did not win gold.
