Tampa Bay newspaper dubs area ‘Titletown’ following Buccaneers’ Super Bowl win

The Buccaneers' Super Bowl win comes months after the Lightning won the Stanley Cup.

When Tom Brady left New England for Tampa Bay, he may have taken the “Titletown” moniker with him.

Brady and the Buccaneers captured the franchise’s second Super Bowl title Sunday night, defeating the Chiefs 31-9. In doing so, the Bucs became the second Tampa Bay team to win a title in the last five months, joining the Lightning who won the Stanley Cup in September.

With Tampa Bay winning titles in different sports in less than a year’s time, the Tampa Bay Times plastered “TITLETOWN” as the headline on the front page of its sports section in Monday’s paper.

Boston has been called “Titletown” in recent years. From the time Brady won his first Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2001 to the time he won his sixth with the team in 2018, the four major Boston sports teams won a combined 12 titles. None of the major Boston sports franchises have won a title since the Patriots’ win over the Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

In addition to nicknaming itself “Titletown,” the Tampa Bay Times gave the city another nickname: Champa Bay. The paper shared an image of Brady holding the Lombardi Trophy and Steven Stamkos holding the Stanley Cup with the new nickname as the headline.

The front page of Monday’s Tampa Bay Times had a more simple look to it, featuring an image of the Lombari Trophy with the headline “BUCS WIN.”
