Morning Sports Update: Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski celebrate Super Bowl by remaking classic video
Brady and Gronkowski will play in their fifth Super Bowl together.
Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to the Super Bowl after defeating the Green Bay Packers, 31-26, in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game. It will be Brady’s 10th appearance in the Super Bowl, extending his record for most Super Bowl appearances by one player.
The Buccaneers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. The Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills, 38-24, on Sunday to win the AFC title for the second straight year. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will now look to become the first team since the 2003-04 Patriots to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
In Boston sports news, the Celtics blew out the Cavaliers, 141-103, on Sunday for their best win of the season, ending their three-game losing streak. There’s more good news for Celtics fans as star forward Jayson Tatum will return to action when the Celtics face the Bulls on Monday. Tatum missed the last five games after reportedly testing positive for COVID-19.
Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski celebrate NFC Championship Game victory: As we mentioned earlier, Tom Brady is going back to the Super Bowl after the Buccaneers defeated the Packers in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.
Brady’s taking Rob Gronkowski with him as the star duo will play in their fifth Super Bowl together (Gronkowski was injured and didn’t play in Super Bowl LI). Late Sunday evening, Brady posted a video on his social media pages of him and Gronkowski heading to the team plane. Both players had a smirk on their faces, with Gronkowski flashing his “NFC Champions” T-shirt, and neither saying a word as P. Diddy’s “Bad Boy for Life” played in the background. Brady simply captioned the post by writing “W.”

If the video looks familiar to you, you’re not mistaken. Brady and Gronkowski did the same thing after defeating the Chiefs in the 2018 AFC Championship Game, even playing the same song.

Brady and Gronkowski only connected for one completion in Sunday’s game, with Gronkowski taking a screen pass 29 yards down the field in the fourth quarter. The play ended up paying off as it set the Buccaneers up for a field goal that extended their lead to 31-23.
Once Brady, Gronkowski, and the Buccaneers touch back down in Tampa, they won’t have to leave home for the rest of the season. They will become the first team to ever play a Super Bowl in their home stadium as Raymond James Stadium will host Super Bowl LV. It took three road playoff wins for the Buccaneers to make it there, making them the fifth team to accomplish that feat.
The Buccaneers will face the Chiefs in Tampa on Feb. 7. The two teams faced off already this season, with Kansas City coming away victorious, winning 27-24. It’ll mark the second playoff matchup between Brady and Patrick Mahomes, who Brady defeated in the aforementioned 2018 AFC Championship Game.
Trivia: With Sunday’s win, Brady became the first quarterback to lead an AFC and NFC team to the Super Bowl. However, three other quarterbacks have started in the Super Bowl for two different teams. Who are the other three to accomplish that?
(Answer at the bottom).
Hint: Brady’s faced one of them in a Super Bowl before.

On this day: One year ago at the 2020 NHL All-Star Game, Bruins forward David Pastrnak won the MVP after scoring a total of four goals and two assists over the two 3-0n-3 games he and the Atlantic Division All-Stars played in. Pastrnak became the fourth Bruins player to win the award and was the first to win it since Bill Guerin won it in the 2001 All-Star Game.
Pastrnak won’t be able to defend his title this season as the league announced there will be no All-Star Game for the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Daily highlight: The Buccaneers’ biggest play in their win on Sunday came right at the end of the first half. With everyone expecting the Bucs to try and move a few yards closer to help set them up for a better field goal attempt, they opted to go for six points instead. Brady connected with receiver Scotty Miller on a 39-yard touchdown pass to put the Buccaneers up 21-10 going into halftime.
