Tom Brady

Morning sports update: Keyshawn Johnson theorized why Tom Brady will have ‘high’ number of interceptions this season

Johnson thinks an offense designed by Bruce Arians will result in more Brady turnovers.

Tom Brady threw two interceptions in the loss to the Saints.

The Celtics went to overtime against the Heat in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Tuesday night, but ultimately fell short, 117-114.

The decisive moment came with seconds remaining when Bam Adebayo blocked Jayson Tatum’s attempted dunk at the rim in a truly spectacular play:

And Tanner Houck won his MLB debut for the Red Sox, pitching five scoreless innings and recording seven strikeouts. Boston defeated Miami, 2-0.

In other national news, the Big Ten football conference voted to belatedly begin its season after initially canceling due to COVID-19.

Keyshawn Johnson on Tom Brady: After Tom Brady through two interceptions (including a pick-six for the third game in a row), there was discussion after the Buccaneers’ season-opening loss to the Saints about the former Patriot’s struggles in a new system.

One former player who thinks Brady might continue to throw an abnormal number of interceptions is Keyshawn Johnson.

The 1996 No. 1 overall pick, now an ESPN analyst, spoke to WEEI’s “Dale & Keefe” on Tuesday about what he thinks of Brady’s coach, Bruce Arians, and the effect he has on quarterbacks.

“I think if you go back and look at Bruce Arians’s history of coaching quarterbacks, whether he’s the quarterback coach, the offensive coordinator or the head coach, when he’s had a quarterback for the first time — whether it’s Ben Roethlisberger, Tim Couch, Peyton Manning, Jameis Winston, Carson Palmer — their interception rate is high the first year,ā€ Johnson explained.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Tom Brady threw more interceptions this year than he has in a very, very long time because history just shows me that for whatever reason [what] Bruce and Bryon Leftwich is putting together, people don’t grasp immediately,” Johnson continued. “Now, the curve may be different because those guys were a little younger, where Tom Brady is 20 years in, but he’s still going to have some issues because everything is new.”

Trivia: Tanner Houck was the first member of the Red Sox’ 2017 draft class to play in the Majors, but another member of that class has already played for Boston this season (though he was drafted by another team). Name that player.

(Answer at the bottom).

Hint: He was named after a former Red Sox rival.

More from Boston.com:

Maya Moore and Jonathan Irons are married

: Moore, a former UConn star who also won four WNBA championships in a glittering professional career, walked away from basketball in 2019 to help advocate for prison reform.

As part of that, Moore focused on the case of Jonathan Franks, who was wrongly imprisoned for more than two decades. Franks, who Moore first met 13 years ago through a prison ministry program, was finally freed from prison in July.

In an announcement on Good Morning America, Moore and Irons revealed to Robin Roberts that they are now married.

Strange but true:

On this day: In 1965, Red Sox pitcher Dave Morehead threw a no-hitter against Cleveland. It happened on the same day that Boston fired general manager Mike Higgins. Amid a disastrous 100-loss season, the 2-0 win was watched by just 1,247 fans at Fenway Park

Notably, the losing pitcher for Cleveland was future Red Sox star Luis Tiant. After four no-hitters in a decade between 1955-1965, no Boston pitcher would repeat the feat again until Hideo Nomo in 2001.

Daily highlight: It won’t be Game 1’s most memorable block, but Robert Williams’s rejection of Goran Dragic is still worthy of another look.

Trivia answer: Jeter Downs.
