Buccaneers GM called Tom Brady-Bruce Arians partnership a ‘perfect marriage’

What is it called when a 42-year-old quarterback teams up with a 67-year-old coach who came out of retirement a year ago to take his current job?

According to Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht, it’s perfection.

Speaking in an interview on Sportscenter Thursday night, Licht was asked if Tom Brady — who signed with the Buccaneers as a free agent in March — would feel “crippling” pressure to win quickly, given his shorter window of opportunity with head coach Bruce Arians.

“I don’t have a lot of concerns on that right now,” Licht explained. “We have a head coach that, to be quite frank, isn’t gonna be here for the next 15, 20 years coaching the Buccaneers. So I think it was actually a perfect marriage.

“You’ve got two guys that have got something to prove,” Licht continued. “They want to win, they want to win now. They’ve got the same mindset.”

Arians retired from coaching following the 2017 season, stepping down as coach of the Cardinals. He ventured for a year into broadcasting with CBS, but was lured back into the NFL by the Buccaneers.

“Getting Tom here, quite frankly, started with hiring Bruce last year,” Licht noted. “I don’t know if we would be in this situation right now without Bruce Arians as our head coach. And they’re kind of living parallel lives right now; they’ve got something to prove, and they want to do it now.”
