Bruce Arians: Certain perceptions of Tom Brady are ‘just wrong’
"He can do everything we want to do in our offense."
Before Tom Brady officially hits the field as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his new head coach, Bruce Arians, wants to set the record the straight.
“He can make every throw,” Arians told ESPN. “He can do everything we want to do in our offense.”
Arians thinks his new quarterback is not only capable of throwing deep, but is versatile enough to understand when shorter balls are worth the investment.
“I think the perception is just wrong,” Arians said. “I thought his deep ball was outstanding last year.
“I’ve had a couple quarterbacks that just keep looking deep – they won’t throw the checkdown. [Offensive consultant] Tom Moore has the best saying in the world: ‘You don’t go broke putting money in the bank. Take the damn checkdown.’ We don’t have to teach Tom that.”
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Brady had a 43 percent completion rate on passes of 20 or more air yards last season, the seventh-highest in the league, and threw seven touchdown passes for 20 or more air yards, his most since 2006.
