Boston Legacy FC gets its goalkeeper: Olympian Casey Murphy
“They call it ‘Title Town’ for a reason, and I’m excited to build a culture here from the ground up and be a part of something new.”
Boston Legacy FC announced Monday the signing of goalkeeper Casey Murphy, who won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2024 Olympics, in a deal that runs through 2029.
Murphy’s multi-year contract is worth over $1.5 million, according to a source with knowledge of the deal, making her one of the highest-paid goalkeepers in NWSL history.
Murphy, 29, will join the upstart club as a free agent from the NWSL’s North Carolina Courage, where she is the club’s all-time regular season wins leader and in 2024 played every minute of the regular season.
“I’m excited to be in such a sports city,” Murphy said in a release. “They call it ‘Title Town’ for a reason, and I’m excited to build a culture here from the ground up and be a part of something new.”
After playing four seasons at Rutgers, the New Jersey native began her professional career with French club Montpellier HSC in 2018. She joined the NWSL’s OL Reign in 2019 and was traded to North Carolina in 2020 and earned 108 caps with the Courage.
Murphy, who was a regular starter on junior national teams, made her senior national team debut in 2021, keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 win in a friendly against Australia. She has since earned 20 international caps.
Team USA coach Emma Hayes named Murphy to the 18-player roster for the Paris Olympics, where she was the backup to Connecticut native Alyssa Naeher and did not see game action.
Murphy is the second goalkeeper on Boston’s roster following the announced signing of Hannah Stambaugh on Thursday.
“There’s a lot of exciting energy and ambition around this team that drew me to it, and I’m just looking forward to putting my leadership skills on display and setting the standard each day for my teammates and meeting new people and getting involved in the community as well,” Murphy said.
The addition of Murphy brings Boston’s player total to 13, still shy of the league-minimum 22. The roster now features three forwards, six midfielders, two defenders, and two goalkeepers.
“Casey’s track record gives her a strong foundation for this next chapter in Boston,” Boston Legacy general manager Domè Guasch said in a release. “Beyond her quality as a goalkeeper, Casey is a true leader. We believe this will be a great addition as we build our first roster for 2026.”
The Legacy will open their inaugural campaign on Saturday, March 14, at 12:30 p.m., at Gillette Stadium.
In 2026, the NWSL will expand to a 30-game schedule from 26 in 2025 with the addition of two teams, Boston and the Denver Summit. The season will last 27 weeks, with a planned break from June 1-28 to account for the men’s World Cup taking place in a number of NWSL cities, which will tie up stadium access.
