Boston Legacy Football Club continued the construction of its inaugural roster with the Thursday announcement that midfielder Alba Caño has been signed, pending approval of her visa.
Caño, 21, has agreed to a contract through the end of 2027 (and that also includes a club option for 2028). As the Legacy will not take the field until debuting in the 2026 season, Caño will remain at Barcelona for the rest of the year on a temporary loan.
The Spanish native rose through the ranks of the Barcelona academy, featuring for the club’s U-19 and Barcelona B squads. Caño has also made appearances for the Barcelona senior team, recording a goal and an assist in Liga F play last season.
“Caño is a technical high-intensity player who will help us in several midfield positions.” Legacy general manager Domè Guasch said per a club statement. “Alba reads the game very well, has great ball control and brings a strong team-first mentality.
“She is young, but has experience at the highest level as she has played alongside some of the best players in the world at Barcelona,” Guasch added. “We are confident that she will continue to grow under [Legacy head coach Filipa Patão’s] leadership.”
For Guasch, who also joined Boston from Barcelona, the move to sign one of his former team’s midfielders makes obvious sense. The Catalonian club has dominated women’s soccer since formally professionalizing in 2015.
Barcelona have played in six of the last seven UEFA Women’s Champions League finals, winning three of them. Two of its stars, Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati, have collectively won the last four consecutive Ballon d’Or Féminin awards (given to the world player of the year).
Caño is the fifth player signed by Boston, a list that now includes midfielder Annie Karich, forward Aïssata Traoré, as well as defenders Emerson Elgin and Laurel Ansbrow.
