Boston Legacy FC moved one step closer to the reality of making an NWSL debut season in 2026, announcing that the club has signed its first player.

Defensive midfielder Annie Karich, a 21-year-old California native, joins Boston on a contract through the 2027 season (and also includes a 2028 option).

Karich was signed as a free agent, having played for SC Freiburg of the Frauen-Bundesliga in the recently concluded season. In all, Karich made 36 appearances for Freiburg across two seasons.

Now, she has the distinction of being the first player signed to Boston’s expansion team.

“I want to grow by developing my overall game as a player and by learning how to adapt again into a new city, new team, and everything, and I’m really excited to do that here in Boston,” Karich said, per the club’s announcement.

Prior to playing in Germany, Karich attended Santa Clara for two years and was named the 2023 West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year (among other honors).

She previously represented the United States at the U15, U17, U20, and U23 levels, and took part in the U.S. effort at the 2022 U20 World Cup.

According to the club, Karich “is on loan to a Liga MX Femenil club for the remainder of 2025 and will join Boston for NWSL preseason in January.”

“Annie is a midfielder that brings a unique blend of technical quality and tactical awareness,” said Legacy general manager Domè Guasch in the club’s announcement. “In her time at SC Freiburg, she has also proved her competitiveness and maturity on the field. Annie has the potential to make a real impact in our team. We’re looking forward to supporting her development within our environment.”

With Karich’s signing, the door is officially open for Guasch to build the team’s expansion roster. The club recently announced that Filipa Patão had been hired from Portuguese side Benfica to be the team’s first head coach.

Boston will begin playing regular season games in its inaugural league campaign in March, 2026. The club is set to play home games at Gillette Stadium in its first year, but is expected to then move to a newly renovated permanent home of White Stadium in 2027.
