Rich Shertenlieb, formerly of 98.5 The Sports Hub and, more recently, WZLX, announced a new venture Tuesday with the purpose of raising money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Center.
In a short video, Shertenlieb announced that he is launching a pair of new shows on YouTube and other streaming services — titled “Hey Rich Hey” and “Nonsense 911” — on what he will call the “Open Your Prize” network.
Each video and podcast will conclude with a barcode or a call to action to donate to the Pan-Mass Challenge bicycle ride, Dana-Farber’s biggest fund-raiser.
As Shertenlieb’s longtime listeners know, cancer research is a deeply personal cause for his family. Shertenlieb’s wife, Mary, is a three-time cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with a recurrence of leukemia in November, 12 years after her initial diagnosis.
“The people at Dana-Farber Cancer Center saved my wife’s life, are attempting to save it again, so this is the only way I know how to give back,” said Shertenlieb in an email.
In his video announcing the new venture, Shertenlieb — who said he will be participating in the Pan-Mass Challenge this year — elaborated briefly on what his wife faces. “She is one of the toughest people on the planet,” he said.
He said he can’t put into words his appreciation for how important Dana-Farber has been to his wife and family. “I don’t know how you pay back somebody for saving the life of somebody you love,” he said, “but this is how I’m going to try.”
