Bill Belichick gave possibly his happiest ever interview while at a lacrosse game: The Premier Lacrosse League got underway over the weekend, playing its opening slate of games at Gillette Stadium.
The league’s games are broadcast by NBC Sports, and has adopted some innovative coverage techniques, such as in-game mic’d up players.
One fan who was in attendance on the sideline was Bill Belichick. The Patriots coach has a well known love of lacrosse, and gave a cheery interview as the game was going on.
In the opening question, Belichick was asked to “compare his feelings” of coaching the Patriots and watching lacrosse.
“Well, this is a lot more enjoyable,” Belichick began, explaining that, “I don’t have to worry as much” at a lacrosse game.
“I love lacrosse,” said a smiling Belichick. “It’s a fun sport to play. You know it’s great in the spring, kind of at the end of the school year playing lacrosse and just being out there with all of your friends, playing on nice days like this.”
When asked what position Tom Brady would play in lacrosse, Belichick had an instant response.
“Goalie,” said Belichick. “You need to be able to run here. I think some of our players like Devin McCourty and Pat Chung, guys like that that are fast and have good quickness, could play at 200, 205 pounds, 210 pounds, somewhere in there that they would be pretty tough.
“I think [Tedy] Bruschi would’ve been a good defenseman, Rodney Harrison, those guys would’ve been pretty good. Vrabel [and] guys like that, that are long and tough.”

On this day: In 1995, Pedro Martinez retired 27 consecutive batters for the Expos in what was technically a perfect game through nine innings. But in extra innings, Martinez (still on the mound for Montreal), gave up a single to start the 10th and was pulled. The Expos won, 1-0, but Martinez was denied an official place in baseball history.
And in 1997, Brazilian left back Roberto Carlos struck one of the best free kicks in history in a 1-1 draw against France. The replays are worth a watch, showing the physics-defying spin.
