Morning sports update: Don Sweeney explained where the Bruins are looking to upgrade
Also: Brad Stevens' joke about the starting lineup, the smartest player Doc Rivers coached, and Paul Pierce among the greats.
The Bruins host the Islanders at TD Garden on Thursday at 7 p.m., while the Celtics will welcome the Cavaliers on Friday.
The Bruins are “looking for help” already: Bruins general manager Don Sweeney was asked by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently if Boston is trying to make an upgrade to their roster.
“Up front, certainly,” Sweeney responded.
Through 24 games, the Bruins are fourth in the Atlantic Division. Injuries to key players like Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron have hampered the early season.

Paul Pierce’s place among the Celtics greats
: With his jersey retired and hanging in the rafters of TD Garden, Paul Pierce’s place in Celtics history is assured. Yet his journey remains a remarkable story, and his draft-day slide was something he never forgot. The motivation carried him through a dominant career. [The Boston Globe]
Doc Rivers called Rajon Rondo, “The smartest guy I’ve ever been around in basketball.”
“@RajonRondo is the smartest guy I’ve ever been around, basketball-wise. He studies like a coach. … I think [Rondo] helps Lonzo in the long run. @ZO2_ is going to be a heck of a player. He’s a great passer, he has great instincts, his offense will be fine.” — @DocRivers pic.twitter.com/IrnfCsfoOs

Brad Stevens gave a typically deadpan response about when he plans to have a settled starting lineup:
