Here are the four highest-paid New England athletes in 2017
Surprisingly, neither Tom Brady nor Rob Gronkowski rank among New England’s highest-paid athletes. And while one Red Sox pitcher makes an appearance, it isn’t team ace Chris Sale.
In Forbes’ recently released list of the highest paid athletes of 2017, stars like Brady, Gronkowski and Sale are nowhere to be found in the top 100. Instead, it’s a collection of players who signed as big money free agents. Here are the highest placed New England players:
36. David Price, Red Sox: $30.6 million
39. Stephon Gilmore, Patriots: $29.3 million
44. Al Horford, Celtics: $28.1 million
82. Hanley Ramirez, Red Sox: $22.3 million
Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo ranked No. 1 overall at $93 million in total pay. LeBron James ($86.2 million), Lionel Messi ($80 million), Roger Federer ($64 million) and Kevin Durant (60.6 million) rounded out the top five.
Brady’s absence was specifically noted by Forbes, who explained that while the Patriots’ franchise quarterback was paid $44 million in 2016 (good for 15th on last year’s list), his total was significantly less in 2017 due to the way his current contract is structured.
