Noted Boston fan and sports media mogul Bill Simmons’s new website, The Ringer, is officially up and running. Announced earlier on Wednesday, the site is hosted on Medium and has already attracted a large following.
With more than 218,000 Twitter followers on day one of publication (as the account has been tweeting for weeks prior to launch), Simmons’s first project since parting ties with ESPN a little over a year ago is off to an auspicious start. Having gone on a hiring spree in March, the site appears to be following a similar model set during Simmons’s time running Grantland (which, ironically, is a word The Ringer’s editor is trying to avoid even saying).
In fact, Ringer editor-in-chief Sean Fennessey has taken steps to distance himself and his former job from his new one.
“I’m really excited that people care about Grantland, but this is a very different project,” Fennessy told the Washington Post.
And given its stated verticals, which include “Tech” alongside “Game of Thrones,” there already appear to be differences with Grantland (now defunct) on The Ringer’s first day.
