Revolution trade Jermaine Jones to Rapids
The Jermaine Jones Era is officially over in New England.
The Revolution traded the midfielder to the Colorado Rapids on Friday in exchange for a first-round selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft and cash. The deal was announced by the teams less than 48 hours before the start of the 2016 MLS season.

Jones, 34, arrived in New England in August 2014 as a Designated Player not long after starring for the U.S. men’s national team at the World Cup. The German-born American famously scored a game-tying goal against Portugal in the tournament. For the Revolution, he scored three goals and recorded six assists in 33 regular and post-season appearances. In his final appearance for the club, Jones was ejected for an on-field altercation with an official during the closing moments of the opening game of the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs. Jones received a six-game suspension from MLS for the incident.
The trade comes after Jones and the Revolution failed to agree on terms for a new contract during the offseason. In December, Jones publicly expressed unhappiness with the team’s offer. In February, the Revolution signed midfielder Xavier Kouassi to a Designated Player contract. The 26-year-old Ivorian had most recently played for Swiss club FC Sion.
