While it’s not quite the Boston-based stadium that fans covet, the New England Revolution broke ground on a new training facility on Monday.

Slated for completion by the summer of 2019, the planned facility will encompass 68-acres and include three new fields (two with natural grass and one with turf). New buildings totaling 42,000 square feet will provide space for the team as well as front office staff. In all, the project will be privately funded for an estimated cost of $35 million.

Located adjacent to Gillette Stadium, a Revs announcement on the facility promised that the project will “prioritize ecological preservation” of the surrounding wetlands.

And team investor-operator Robert Kraft appeared to allude to another development that Revs fans have long hoped for: A soccer-specific stadium.

“Hopefully, this is the first of two great groundbreakings which are going to make soccer even stronger in this community.”
