The New England Revolution have traded forward Charlie Davies to the Philadelphia Union.

In addition to Davies, the Revs will send a third-round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for general allocation money, targeted allocation money, and the Union’s natural first-round pick in 2018.

The 30 year-old Davies appeared in nine games for the Revolution this season, taking 11 shots and scoring one goal in his first season with the team. He scored four goals for the Revolution in the 2014 postseason.

Davies’ local ties extend not only to his residence in Hingham, but also his college days at Boston College.

The trade comes just days after the striker revealed that he had been diagnosed and treated for liposarcoma, a rare cancer, and is now in remission. The team released a statement in conjunction with the announcement, saying they hoped to respect Davies’ privacy.

“It was important to do what was right for Charlie and his family,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said. “If it wasn’t right for them, we wouldn’t have considered it.”

Davies is no stranger to adversity, having overcome a near fatal car-crash at the age of 23. The ensuing surgery left him with one leg shorter than the other, but the forward overcame any questions about his ability by returning to the field 18 months later.

Davies also took to his Twitter to thank the Revolution fans, and say his good-byes.
