LOWELL — The Boston Fleet shot up the PWHL standings by going nine consecutive games without a regulation defeat.
But the Fleet’s charge has been stopped cold over the past week — ironically, by the Charge.
Coming off a 2-1 loss to Ottawa on Saturday, the Fleet had no answer for former Boston player Shiann Darkangelo, nor once again for former Northeastern goaltender Gwyneth Philips on Wednesday at Tsongas Center.
Darkangelo secured her first PWHL hat trick against her former team, and Phillips stopped all 17 shots she faced as Ottawa beat the Fleet, 4-0, in the league’s last game before a three-week break for the IIHF Women’s World Championships.
The Fleet (8-6-4-9) have now lost three straight games in regulation after their impressive nine-game run, and still sit in third place in the PWHL standings on 40 points. Coach Courtney Kessel’s crew returned to Tsongas for the first time since March 18, losing for just the second time in nine games there this season.
Ottawa (11-1-4-11, 40 points) moved past Minnesota for fourth in the standings, just behind the Fleet on winning percentage.
Darkangelo, who played 17 games last season with Boston before being traded to Ottawa, scored a power-play goal 45 seconds into the game when she was left alone in front of the goal to redirect Anna Meixner’s pass between the pads of Aerin Frankel.
Darkangelo added another midway through the second for a 2-0 lead. Ronja Savolainen set up the goal by dropping the puck off to Darkangelo and driving forward to create a gap for the shot.
Darkangelo scored her eighth goal of the season on a one-timer that deflected off the skate of Sydney Bard at 6:29 of the third to cap the scoring.
It was Ottawa’s third hat trick of the season, with the other two from Tereza Vanišová. Jincy Roese had the other Ottawa goal.
Philips made her fifth straight start for Ottawa and secured her second shutout during her rookie season.
Emma Söderberg (7 saves) started the third period in goal for the Fleet in place of Frankel (13 saves), Phillips’ former Northeastern teammate.
Ottawa defender Zoe Boyd got served a five-minute major and a game misconduct in the third for a check to the head.
The Fleet are now off until April 26, when the host Toronto at Tsongas.
