Just two days after PWHL Boston and Ottawa played before 13,736 fans, setting the U.S. women’s hockey attendance record, the two teams struck a last-minute deal at the trade deadline.
On Monday evening, Boston acquired forward Lexie Adzija and the rights to forward Caitrin Lonergan from Ottawa in exchange for Shiann Darkangelo.
For Lonergan, the trade is a homecoming. The Roslindale native played three seasons at Boston College from 2016-2019 before continuing her career at Clarkson. She was a two-time finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, an accolade given to the top women’s college player.
The 26-year-old then went on to play for the PHF’s Connecticut Whale and was picked in the 14th round of the 2023 PWHL Draft by Ottawa, but did not sign.

Adzija, 23, was drafted by Ottawa in the 11th round, signing a one-year contract. The Quinnipiac University alum has tallied five goals and three assists in 17 matches this season.
The forward exchange comes as both Ottawa and Boston battle for the fourth and final playoff spot. Currently, Boston sits just one point (22) ahead of Ottawa (21) with seven games to play.
Ottawa is hoping Darkangelo can give them the boost they need down the stretch to secure a postseason run. The former PFH’s Toronto Six captain — who helped guide her team to the 2023 Isobel Cup championship — was drafted in the 12th round following her most productive professional season.
Ottawa plays PWHL New York Wednesday, while Boston faces off against Toronto that night.
