At least we can pretend Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are a couple
The sultry gazes. The intimate lifts.
They skate to the “Moulin Rouge’’ soundtrack, for goodness’ sake.
But ice dancing gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir aren’t a romantic pair, they say, much to the disappointment of everyone who has ever watched them skate.

Oh well. We can learn to appreciate Canada’s unofficial first couple (apologies to Justin and Sophie Trudeau, who are lovely and a real couple) as just friends.

It turns out, Virtue’s initial interest was in Danny Moir, Scott’s brother.
“Certainly not,’’ Virtue told reporters after the duo’s gold-medal performance, having been asked if she ever expected to be in that position. “Although in Grade 1 I did write in my journal that I wanted to be at the Olympics with Danny Moir, Scott’s brother, so I’m close. I am thrilled with this competition. That performance was really special and truly memorable. We are so grateful to our team for having prepared us for this. We are taking in every single moment.’’
The entire country of Canada, most Olympics viewers, and, well, pretty much all parties are likely pleased that Tessa and Scott wound up together. Even if they’re not actually together. We can just pretend.
