Ten years ago, Katie Ledecky — then a nine-year-old swimmer with Olympic dreams — asked Michael Phelps for an autograph. On Monday, the roles were reversed. The two champions recreated their famous autograph photo a decade later for TODAY, with Ledecky giving her signature to a swimmer she started watching when she was six years old.

Phelps, who is retiring after the Olympics, told host Matt Lauer that America’s swimming program is in great shape with Ledecky and her young counterparts leading the charge.

“Katie’s doing her thing and she’s breaking records every time she gets in the pool,” Phelps said. “It’s been an honor for me to be a part of the team with her and some of the younger guys that we have coming up in the sport that are going to take over.”
