Needham native Aly Raisman took home the silver medal in the women’s gymnastics individual all-around competition Thursday, but finishing runner-up to teammate Simone Biles — whose margin of victory was larger than the margins of the last nine gold medalists in the same event combined — was a pretty good consolation prize.Raisman also received a second consolation prize in the form of congratulations from another beloved Boston athlete: Red Sox slugger David Ortiz.

Ortiz sent the tweet to his “good friend” Raisman about an hour before the Sox played the last of their three-game series against the Yankees. The duo have attended several charity events together in the past, with Raisman auctioning off private gymnastics lessons to help raise money for the David Ortiz Children’s Fund in 2012.

Ortiz wasn’t the only athlete to congratulate Raisman or Biles, however. Many current and former Olympians took time to recognize the dominance of the two gymnasts.
