More with the NHL

The past weekend served as a bye for men’s college hockey leading up to the Frozen Four in St. Louis on Thursday, but there were still some must-see moments for local fans, courtesy of recent stars now plying their trade in the NHL.

Former Boston College forward Ryan Leonard scored his first goal, just four days after signing with the Capitals, and three days after making his debut against the Bruins. His empty-netter Friday sealed Washington’s 5-3 win over the Blackhawks.

Making the moment even more special was an in-person visit and congratulations from Wayne Gretzky after the game in the locker room.

“The kid who scored on the empty net, where is he?” Gretzky asked.

After Leonard emerged from behind his teammates, Gretzky shook the Amherst native’s hand.

“Congratulations on your first goal,” Gretzky said, before gesturing to Alexander Ovechkin. “Eight hundred and ninety five more and you can pass him.”

The Great One was on hand as Ovechkin tied his record of 894 goals. Ovechkin broke the record in Sunday’s game against the Islanders.

Former Boston University star Lane Hutson scored an impressive goal for the Canadiens on Saturday in a 3-2 win over the Flyers, starting out behind his net and carrying the puck up center ice before circling to the left and firing it in from the goal line.

On Sunday, Hutson recorded an assist in Montreal’s 2-1 win at Nashville to give him 64 points, tying Chris Chelios’s franchise record for a rookie defenseman and enhancing his case to win the Calder Trophy.
