Four months after the tragic deaths of former Boston College hockey players Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew’s widow, Madeline Gaudreau, gave birth to the couple’s first child.
Madeline shared a photo of the couple’s newborn son, Tripp Matthew Gaudreau, on Instagram.
“Tripp Matthew 🤍🦋, ” Madeline wrote. “Mommy & Daddy’s world.”
Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29 were killed near their childhood home in New Jersey on Aug. 29, less than 24 hours before the brothers were set to serve as groomsmen at the wedding of their sister, Katie.
The brothers were riding bicycles on a rural road when they were struck by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver.
Sean M. Higgins, 43, is charged with two counts of death by auto, along with reckless driving, possession of an open container, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.
During a preliminary court hearing, a prosecutor stated that Higgins had a blood-alcohol level of .087 and allegedly has a history of road rage and aggressive driving.
Johnny and Matthew played three and four seasons at Boston College, respectively. The elder Gaudreau won a title with the Eagles in 2012; after being drafted by the Calgary Flames, Johnny opted to stay at BC for a third season in order to play with Matthew.
Prior to the start of the 2024-25 season, Boston College announced that its hockey team would honor the Gaudreau brothers with uniform patches throughout the season.
Johnny, who played 11 seasons in the NHL, was honored throughout the league with video tributes and moments of silence prior to the start of the 2024-25 season as well.
Johnny’s widow, Meredith Gaudreau, who is pregnant with their third child, shared the video tribute on social media and expressed her gratitude.
“Beautifully said for the two best boys,” Meredith tweeted. “So heart broken but forever grateful to be John’s wife and Matty’s sister. I love you both so much.”
