Report: Mac Jones spotted a dead body before leading 49ers to OT victory
"As the 49ers loaded buses for the stadium, players watched investigators and even a coroner’s van pull into the marina. On Friday afternoon, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the incident was still under investigation."
Former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones had a scary experience the morning before he led the 49ers to an overtime victory against the Rams last Thursday, according to a report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
“That morning at the team hotel in Marina del Rey,” Russini wrote. “Jones told teammates he was on his balcony when he looked out at the water and saw a floating dead body.
“Someone called the police. As the 49ers loaded buses for the stadium, players watched investigators and even a coroner’s van pull into the marina. On Friday afternoon, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the incident was still under investigation.”
San Francisco won the game that night with a 26-23 overtime triumph against Los Angeles. Jones went 33-for-49 passing for 342 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and no interceptions. He was filling in for Brock Purdy, who has been out several weeks with a toe injury.
“They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,” Jones said after the game. “Brock’s the starter of this team. Right now, he’s dealing with something. And for him to go out there last week and play, when he probably wasn’t at full health, it shows that he cares about this team.”
“I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. I’ve been in his position. I’ve been a starter, and you want your backup to go in there and win because at the end of the season, that could be the hit-or-miss between the playoffs or not.”
According to NFL.com, Purdy is considered week-to-week and it’s not yet clear when he will return.
San Francisco has won three straight since Jones took over. The former Patriots quarterback, who is on his third team in three years, has completed 66.7 percent of his passes this season with six touchdowns against one interception.
New England traded Jones to his hometown Jacksonville Jaguars for a sixth-round pick after the 2023 season. He lasted one year with the Jaguars before signing with the 49ers this offseason.
It’s a small sample size, but he has had success in San Francisco so far.
“He doesn’t just look like a competent fill-in,” Russini wrote. “He looks like a quarterback worthy of a second chance somewhere else. For now, though, he’s Brock Purdy’s stand-in. And clearly, he can handle just about anything.”
