Sports Q: Who is the second-best coach in the NFL?

Who is second-place to the best coach in the NFL, Bill Belichick?

Welcome to Boston.com’s Sports Q, our daily conversation, initiated by you and moderated by Chad Finn, about a compelling topic in Boston sports. Here’s how it works: You submit questions to Chad through TwitterFacebook, and email,He’ll pick one each weekday to answer, then we’ll take the discussion to the comments. Chad will stop by several times per day to navigate. But you drive the conversation.

Obviously there are a million different ways to examine how Bill Belichick is so much better than any coach in the NFL, or any other in history for that matter. One of them that I was thinking about recently is that there isn’t even a clear second-best coach in the league right now. There’s no one even close to him, and no one that is a clear second-best. It’s BB, and then an argument about a bunch of very flawed coaches like Andy Reid, who I actually think is the second-best. Asking you: who do you think the second-best head coach in the league is right now? – Chris F.

This one sounded familiar, so I looked it up, and we have covered it here at the Sports Q before. In November 2017, I reluctantly voted for the Steelers’ Mike Tomlin while kicking around the names of Pete Carroll, Andy Reid, John Harbaugh, and – way off on this one – Mike McCarthy.

Redoing that list now, I’d probably go with Reid, with Harbaugh second and Tomlin third. I’ll never vote for Pete Carroll. I remember him here.

I think Doug Pederson would probably get some consideration now, but it’s one of his former assistants who is really a fast riser. Frank Reich – the Eagles’ offensive coordinator during their Super Bowl LII win over the Patriots – is doing some remarkable work in Indianapolis. Jacoby Brissett is blossoming, they have a tough, creative running game, and the kind of excellent offensive line that former GM Ryan Grigson refused to build during his successful plot to abbreviate Andrew Luck’s career.

I think I’ll go with Reid for now. But if this season goes this way I suspect it will for Indy – meaning they come to Foxborough for the AFC Championship Game this year —  I’ll change my pick to Reich.

But what does everyone else think? Who is the second-best coach in the NFL? I’ll hear you in the comments.
