Morning sports update: Jets coach Adam Gase reacted to the internet’s obsession with his eyes

The Celtics lost their third game in a row, falling 109-102 to the Nets on Monday night. At TD Garden, the Bruins lost to the Canadiens in overtime, 3-2.

What Jets coach Adam Gase had to say about the eye memes: Within minutes of his introductory press conference on Monday, newly installed Jets head coach Adam Gase became the unexpected subject of viral memes due to his intense look.

Gase, who was fired by the Dolphins on Dec. 31, was hired by Miami’s AFC East counterpart days later. Gase succeeds former Jets coach Todd Bowles, who was fired on Dec. 30.

Quickly, his wandering glare fascinated social media users, whose humorous memes eventually worked their way back to Gase himself. As a guest later in the day on ESPN New York’s “The Michael Kay Show,” Gase was asked by Kay about his reaction to the coverage of his eyes.

“When you walked out in the press conference, the thing that struck me was how intense your eyes were,” Kay began. Of the memes, Gase said, “I don’t even know what that is.”

“Alright, I’ll just let you know,” Gase continued, “I don’t have Twitter. I don’t have Instagram. I don’t look at the internet. I don’t really watch TV. I watch movies, and that’s it.”

Asked what his favorite movie is, Gates replied, “Probably ‘Field of Dreams.'”

And on the all-important issue of whether or not the movie “Die Hard” should be considered a Christmas movie, Gase was definitive.

On this day: Exactly 50 years ago in 1969, former Red Sox manager Mike Higgins was sentenced to four years of hard labor in a Louisiana prison for negligent homicide as the result of a car crash while driving drunk. Higgins’s accident killed one man and injured several others. He served just two months of the sentence before being paroled, but died within 48 hours of a heart attack.

In 1979, a U.S. District Court judge granted a preliminary injunction in favor of the Patriots, barring the University of Colorado from hiring New England head coach Chuck Fairbanks. The acrimonious split of the Patriots and Fairbanks would continue in a high level court battle until April, when Colorado boosters agreed to compensate the Patriots nearly half a million dollars.

The expensive maneuvering to secure Fairbanks as coach failed to pay dividends for Colorado, who went 7-26 in three seasons before being fired. His lavish spending became the subject of a famously scathing 1980 Paul Zimmerman column in Sports Illustrated.

And in 1997, Arsenal forward Dennis Bergkamp shocked even himself with an “exquisite” goal against Sunderland.
