New England athletes earn ten nominations at 2015 ESPYs

New England athletes earned ten nominations in the 2015 ESPY Awards voting, which began Wednesday morning.

The Patriots lead New England teams in nominations with five, with Bill Belichick in the running for Best Coach (along with UConn Women’s Basketball coach Geno Auriemma), Tom Brady for Best NFL Player, Super Bowl XLIX for Best Game and Rob Gronkowski for Best Comeback. Malcolm Butler’s Super Bowl-sealing interception was seeded fourth in the competition’s 16-entry Best Play bracket.

Boston University hockey phenom Jack Eichel is in the running for Best Male College Athlete, UConn hoops star Breanna Stewart is up for Best Female College Athlete, the New England Revolution’s Lee Nguyen is nominated for Best MLS Player and snowboarder Kelly Clark, born in Vermont, is up for Best Female Action Sports Athlete.

Brady was not nominated for Best Championship Performance or Best Record-Breaking Performance despite tying, breaking or extending nine records during Super Bowl XLIX.
