The Revolution announced a trade on Friday that will help to reshape the team’s roster under new head coach Marko Mitrović.
New England traded forward Tomás Chancalay to Minnesota United FC in exchange for $100,000 in a cash-for-player deal. The Revolution, per the club’s announcement, also “retains a percentage of future transfer fees received.”
“On behalf of the Revolution, I’d like to thank Tomás for his contributions during his time with our club,” Sporting Director Curt Onalfo said in the club’s announcement. “We wish him and his family all the best as he begins this next chapter with Minnesota.”
After joining New England in the summer of 2023, he scored 12 goals and added three assists in 49 MLS appearances. He suffered a torn ACL in June 2024, but returned in April 2025, finishing the year with four goals and two assists in 26 appearances.
Chancalay, 26, was a “Designated Player” on the Revolution’s roster, meaning that his departure creates a possible vacancy for a higher-salaried player. At the end of the disappointing 2025 season in which New England finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs for the second season in a row, the Revolution had reached the MLS-allowed cap for Designated Players with three.
But with Chancalay’s exit and the possibility that the club could convert Matt Turner’s contract from a DP deal to a TAM contract (“Targeted Allocation Money”), that would leave club captain Carles Gil as the team’s only remaining Designated Player.
Even if Turner — who rejoined New England on loan from French club Olympique Lyonnais in August 2025 on a one-year deal — remains a Designated Player, the result is that Onalfo has more flexibility to reshape the roster under Mitrović.
New England begins preseason on Jan. 13 and opens the 2026 MLS season on Feb. 21 on the road against Nashville SC.
