The Revolution’s busy roster overhaul during the offseason continued on Thursday, with the addition of a speedy winger.

Luis Diaz, a 26-year-old Costa Rican with previous MLS experience, is joining New England on a one-year contract for the upcoming season. Per the team announcement, the club also has options to extend the deal in 2026 and 2027.

Diaz will not occupy an international roster spot, as he is already a green card holder. He signed with the Revolution on a free transfer from Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa.

Known for his speed, New England will hope the winger can bring a level of dynamism back to its attack that was often missing in 2024.

Diaz has history playing for Revolution head coach Caleb Porter, as the two overlapped during their time with the Columbus Crew. Diaz joined the MLS side in 2019 as a Young Designated Player, and totaled 83 appearances for the Crew, notching six goals with 14 assists. (He also made three appearances for the Colorado Rapids in 2023).

Porter managed Diaz and Columbus to an MLS Cup title in 2020, and noted that he will add another option to the roster.

“Luis Díaz is an explosive player who will bring penetration to our attack,” Porter said per the team’s announcement. “He adds a dynamic option that will give us depth and versatility to our roster. Luis is another signing who has been a part of winning teams and is in his prime playing years. I’m glad to have him on the squad and look forward to his contributions.”

Diaz has made eight appearances at the international level for Costa Rica. He helped Deportivo Saprissa win the Primera División Verano trophy in 2024, scoring four goals with nine assists for the club in all competitions.

New England will begin the 2025 MLS season on Feb. 22 at Nashville SC. The club is coming off a disappointing year in 2024, sinking to 14th in the Eastern Conference and failing to make the playoffs.
