After having to endure a week in which the team traded one of its longest-tenured players and saw its latest effort to build a local stadium falter, Revolution fans finally got some good news on Friday morning.
New England announced the signing of 22-year-old Argentine attacker Luca Langoni, who will join the club on a club-record transfer fee from Boca Juniors pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). He will occupy a U-22 Initiative roster spot (an MLS designation that allows teams to sign higher-caliber young talents).
The club did not disclose the exact transfer fee figure (noting only that it’s a club record), but it has been reported to be between $7 million and $7.3 million, depending on add-on fees. His contract will run through the 2027 MLS season, and includes a club option for 2028.
As a player, Langoni can feature as both a winger and an attacking midfielder. He notched 69 appearances for Boca in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and adding four assists.
“In Luca Langoni, Revolution fans can look forward to watching a young game-changing talent who will add attacking quality to our squad, especially in the final third,” Revolution head coach Caleb Porter said via the team announcement.
“Coming from Boca Juniors, Luca will bring an aggressive mentality to create goals from the winger position,” Porter added. “I especially love his work rate on both sides of the ball and direct style of play. He’s always looking to penetrate and will bring increased service from the half spaces. I’m eager to integrate Luca into the team quickly upon his arrival in New England.”
The signing comes at a difficult moment for the Revolution. New England not only occupies last place in the MLS Eastern Conference, but are dealing with a plethora of injuries to important players. All three of the club’s Designated Players have been ruled out in recent weeks, leaving Porter’s attacking options looking thin.
The cap-tied Revolution had to create additional salary space in order to acquire Langoni. This spurred the earlier transaction from this week, in which New England traded left back DeJuan Jones to the Columbus Crew.
Having said on multiple occasions that his team needs “pieces” added to its roster, it remains to be seen if Porter and the New England front office will pursue additional moves prior to end of the secondary transfer window on Aug. 14.
The Revolution are currently immersed in the Leagues Cup. The team’s next game comes on Aug. 6 at home (7:30 p.m.) against Nashville SC in the second group stage game of the midseason tournament.
