Bruce Arena confirmed the Revolution are ‘pursuing’ a new contract for Carles Gil
Arena added that New England hopes to "have something to announce in the near future.”
Since arriving in New England in 2019, Spanish midfielder Carles Gil has made a reputation as one of the more impactful and skillful players in Major League Soccer.
In his first season with the Revolution, Gil was named the MLS Newcomer of the Year. In 2020, despite missing much of the season with an Achilles injury, he managed to return in time for the playoffs, helping to lead New England to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Through six games in 2021, the 28-year-old Gil has been the fulcrum of the Revolution’s attack, and he leads MLS in key passes. He has been central to the team’s current position atop the Eastern Conference.

Given his success and importance to the team, it came as no surprise when — during Sunday’s matchup against Columbus — ESPN commentator and former Revolution forward Taylor Twellman revealed that New England is trying to sign Gil to a new contract.
“From what I’m hearing, Carles Gil’s on the verge of signing a new deal that would make him the highest paid player in Revolution history,” Twellman noted during New England’s 1-0 win. “It would also keep him [in New England] for the next three-and-a-half years.”
On Thursday, Revolution head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena was asked about the report.

“Regarding signing Carles [Gil] to a new contract, we are certainly pursuing that and hope to complete a deal in the near future,” Arena told WPRO’s Tom Quinlan during a press conference. “We just have to wait and see. I think for the most part, we feel comfortable where we are with the negotiations, and hopefully, we have something to announce in the near future.”
Gil’s 2021 guaranteed compensation figure is listed at $2.7 million, according to data from the MLS Players Association. The highest listed salary in team history belonged to former midfielder Jermaine Jones, who reportedly made $3.25 million in 2014.
