What Mike Vrabel said about Drake Maye’s shoulder injury

“I try not to have a whole lot of concern."

FOXBOROUGH — Drake Maye might have landed on the Patriots’ simulated injury report on Wednesday evening, but Mike Vrabel isn’t sounding any alarms over the health of his quarterback more than a week away from Super Bowl LX.

“Not much,” Vrabel said Thursday of the level of concern after Maye was “limited” on Wednesday’s report with a right shoulder injury. “I try not to have a whole lot of concern. I just want to try to prepare the football team and make sure everybody is ready.”

Maye was spotted on the practice field Thursday during the portions open to the media. But New England’s trio of QBs in Maye, Joshua Dobbs, and Tommy DeVito all did not throw with the media in attendance.

Maye appeared to have hurt his shoulder during the third quarter of Sunday’s 10-7 win over the Broncos in the AFC Championship game.

While scrambling for extra yardage, Maye was tackled to the ground by Denver linebacker Talanoa Hufanga, slamming his shoulder into the snowy turf at Empower Field at Mile High.

Maye was spotted rotating his shoulder and adjusting his shoulder pads after getting up. He completed a 31-yard pass to Mack Hollins off a flea-flicker just two plays later. But the 23-year-old QB struggled in the passing game throughout Sunday’s game, completing 10-of-21 throws for 86 yards.

Vrabel pushed back on any possibility that Maye was dealing with his shoulder injury in the weeks leading up to Sunday’s game in Denver.

“No, because then he would have been listed on the injury report before then,” he replied.

Speaking on WEEI Tuesday, Maye downplayed talk of being hindered by any injury.

“I’m feeling good. We’ve got some extra rest. I don’t think it’s from the game. I think it’s just the buildup of throwing, including training camp, 30 weeks straight of throwing and four days a week. It can add up,” Maye said. “But I got some extra rest and I’m feeling good and ready to go for the Super Bowl.”
