The Raiders released a statement on Monday morning, announcing their decision to fire head coach Pete Carroll.
Las Vegas will conduct a search for its fourth coach in three years. Josh McDaniels was fired in 2023. Antonio Pierce was fired in 2024. Now, Carroll is gone.
Minority owner Tom Brady will have a role in picking Carroll’s successor, the team said in its statement.
“Moving forward, General Manager John Spytek will lead all football operations in close collaboration with Tom Brady, including the search for the club’s next coach,” team owner Mark Davis said. “Together, they will guide football decisions with a shared focus on leadership, culture, and alignment with the organization’s long-term vision and goals.”
The NFL approved Brady’s bid to join the Raiders as a limited partner in 2024. He also owns a stake in the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, which Davis also owns.
Carroll, 74, was the oldest coach in the NFL last season. He went 3-14 in his only season with the Raiders. Las Vegas will have the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Spytek was a teammate of Brady’s at Michigan where he played offensive line. He built a lengthy career as a scout for several different franchises including the Eagles, Browns, and Broncos.
He and Brady overlapped again with the Buccanneers from 2020 until Brady’s retirement in 2022. Spytek was Tampa Bay’s director of player personnel at the time and was later promoted to assistant general manager before joining the Raiders.
In addition to his role as a minority owner of the Raiders, Brady works as a broadcaster on FOX.
The Raiders are one of six NFL teams with a head coach vacancy. The Browns fired Kevin Stefanski and the Falcons fired Raheem Morris this week. The Titans fired Mike Vrabel’s replacement Brian Callahan shortly before they played the Patriots. The Cardinals fired Jonathan Gannon. The Giants fired Brian Daboll.
Now the Raiders are on the hunt after firing Carroll, with Brady expected to have input in the search.
