After 20 years of success under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, Patriots owner Robert Kraft had gotten used to winning.
This feeling was quickly halted though after Brady left in 2019. The Patriots have failed to make the playoffs since 2021, and went a mere 4-13 in both 2023 and 2024.
However, under the new coach-quarterback duo of Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye, Kraft is seemingly feeling back to the way he used to.
“I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying this season,” Kraft said Tuesday at The Kraft Foundation and Goodwill’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. “It can’t get better than this.”
Following the departure of Jerod Mayo after just one season, the Patriots hired Vrabel, formerly with the Titans, to take over the head coaching position. This decision seems to have paid off, with the season going better than most would have predicted thus far.
More important to Kraft than his own happiness though, is the happiness of New England fans. This was factored into the decision to fire Mayo, as Kraft and fans alike were tired of losing records.
“The expectations were so low,” Kraft said. “We had to make some hard decisions. Look, our family looks at it like we are custodians of a public asset. We are trying to manage it on that basis in putting fans first. Sometimes we make mistakes, but we want to win and know how important this team is to the whole community. That’s what drives us.”
New England currently holds the top seed in the AFC at 10-2, and are three games ahead of the divisional rival Buffalo Bills in the AFC East.
Part of this success is due to Maye’s excellence. He leads the league in passing yards with 3,130 and is second in MVP odds, only behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.
However, while Kraft is grateful for the team’s success so far, he knows the most important months of the season are still to come.
“We have the best record,” Kraft said. “I hope we have the best team. You know what we always say, ‘The real season starts after Thanksgiving.’”
The Patriots look to extend their win streak to 10 games and continue their playoff push on Monday night as they host the New York Giants.
