Patriots left tackle Will Campbell exited Sunday’s game against the Bengals with a knee injury. He was carted off the field with a towel draped over his head.
The injury occurred with 4:48 to go in the third quarter when Campbell ran downfield to block for TreVeyon Henderson on a pitch play.
Cincinnati defensive end Cedric Johnson dove to tackle Henderson and wound up hitting Campbell in the leg. Several teammates circled around Campbell and knelt while trainers checked him out.
The Patriots initially listed Campbell as questionable to return.
“I don’t have an update on anybody right now, unfortunately,” head coach Mike Vrabel said after the game.
Campbell, who the Patriots selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, has started all 12 games for the Patriots this season. He played 98 percent of the Patriots’ offensive snaps (694) through the first 11 games, which is eighth among 77 qualifying offensive tackles according to Pro Football Focus.
He has five sacks allowed this season, the bulk of which happened early in the season. Vederian Lowe filled in for the injured rookie after the injury.
Campbell’s injury was one of several that the Patriots had to navigate during Sunday’s game. Fellow rookie offensive lineman Jared Wilson left the game with an ankle injury. Special teamer Brendan Schooler also left with an ankle injury.
“Shoot, I love those guys. They’re going to be alright,” quarterback Drake Maye said. “I think that’s the big thing about those guys. They’re going to work hard and they’re going to be back. They’ve done such a good job for us this year.”
“Man, I love those guys. Will and Jared have meant a lot to me,” he added. “I’ve gotten to know them in different ways, and this hurts. It’s disappointing. But that’s this game. That’s life. They’ll bounce back and help us down the road.”
Defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga suffered a chest injury but eventually returned to the game.
“We hated this part of the game and stuff like that,” cornerback Marcus Jones said of the injuries. “But the support system is very important and then always wanting people to end up playing the game whenever they are healthy.”
The Patriots were already without defensive lineman Milton Williams (ankle) and linebacker Jahlani Tavai (personal reasons). They pulled off a 26-20 victory over Cincinnati that went down to the wire.
“It was a battle and it took everybody that came on the trip,” tight end Hunter Henry said. “Obviously a lot of guys went down today, unfortunately, and a lot of guys had to step up and they did and we found a way. That’s what it’s about.”
