One of the Patriots‘ early-season playmakers is set to stay at Foxborough for a little while longer.
Cornerback Marcus Jones, who has two interceptions so far in 2025 and has made plays for New England’s secondary on several occasions, has signed a contract extension, according to the Patriots.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the length of the extension is three years per multiple sources. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the total dollar figure for the extension is $36 million.
Jones, 27, was in the final year of his rookie contract, and was set to become an unrestricted free agent. Now, he will be locked in to help first-year head coach Mike Vrabel’s defense as it tries to help build on the team’s 6-2 start.
Voted a team captain, Jones is a multifaceted contributor to the Patriots. He has played on defense primarily as a slot cornerback. He is also a key contributor on special teams, where Jones leads all NFL players in yards per punt return (21.6 yards per return).
His signature moment came in the Week 4 rout of the Panthers, when Jones took a winding punt return 87 yards back for a touchdown.

Originally drafted by Bill Belichick as a third round pick in 2022, Jones has — appropriately, given the coach who selected him— contributed for the Patriots in all phases of the game. As a rookie, he was used on offense (scoring a touchdown against the Bills) and special teams (returning a punt for a touchdown to win the game against the Jets).
The Patriots defense as a unit has been effective under Vrabel. New England has yielded 18.3 points per game, the fourth best mark in the NFL so far this season. The Patriots have also managed to generate 11 turnovers, tied for the fourth best mark in the league.
