The Patriots found themselves trailing by three with just under a minute to go before halftime in Sunday’s game against the Titans.
CBS analyst Jason McCourty, who played for both the Patriots and Titans during his career, had a prediction for how New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would handle the situation.
It was 1st and 10 on the 39. McCourty thought the Patriots would grind the clock down and try to score with as little time left as possible so that Tennessee would not be able to answer.
“The Patriots aren’t going to go too fast,” McCourty said. Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator, he has a last shot mentality. He wants to make sure they end this half with the ball.”
On the very next play, Drake Maye launched his longest pass completion of the day: a 39-yarder to Kayshon Boutte.
“Next time I have NE I’ll be sure to tell Josh and Drake I hate them for this lol,” McCourty wrote on X after the game.
Maye seemed to get a kick out of the timing between McCourty’s words and his big play when asked about it on WEEI Monday afternoon.

“Ha! No, I didn’t see that. That’s funny,” Maye said with a laugh. “You’re trying to score a touchdown, usually in the two minute scenario you try to get a shot deep to score a touchdown. We did the same thing last week in New Orleans. They gave us an opportunity and we took advantage of it.”
It was one of just two catches for Boutte, who hauled in both of his targets for 55 yards. The Patriots’ defense kept Tennessee off the board in the final minute of the first half, and New England opened the third quarter with a lengthy touchdown drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown run from Rhamondre Stevenson.
Boutte said after the game that he took advantage of “lazy” defense from the Titans’ defensive backs on the play. Maye was impressed by Boutte’s ability to focus and complete the play.
“What a catch, I saw the replay of it. Kayshon, golly, that was a heck of a catch,” Maye said. “I think you always try to come out with points and you know they say the term double-dip after halftime to get points before and after and we did that. From there, I think the mind-set is to try and score points and get a touchdown. That’s what we’re going for.”
