The Patriots are reportedly making a change to the team’s defensive backfield.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, New England is set to release safety Jabrill Peppers. The 29-year-old safety had been with the Patriots since he signed as a free agent in 2022.
Patriots are releasing veteran safety Jabrill Peppers, per source. Peppers still has $4.32 million guaranteed remaining on his contract for this season.

As Schefter noted, Peppers is still owed $4.32 million in guaranteed money on his deal in 2025. It stems from the three-year contract extension he signed with New England in the summer of 2024 that was worth $24 million, and included $11.68 million guaranteed.
Originally a first-round pick by the Browns out of Michigan, Peppers was traded to the Giants in 2019 as part of a blockbuster deal that sent Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland.
After joining the Patriots, he became a regular contributor in the secondary. In 2022, he appeared in all 17 games. In 2023, he started 15 games for New England, grabbing two interceptions, forcing a fumble, and registering 78 combined tackles.
In Oct. 2024, he was arrested in Braintree stemming from charges of alleged domestic violence and cocaine possession. He was eventually acquitted by a jury of the assault and battery charges in January, having admitted to cocaine possession.
In May, Peppers said that he was looking forward to a “fresh start” having missed seven games on the Commissioner’s exempt list due to the legal charges.
Changes continue to be made to the Patriots’ depth chart at the safety position. While he remains on the roster, fellow New England veteran Kyle Dugger has been rumored to be a trade candidate, and played in preseason with the backups. With new head coach Mike Vrabel, the Patriots could be looking at a completely new tandem of starting safeties, as Jaylinn Hawkins and rookie Craig Woodson could feature in the Sept. 7 season opener against the Raiders.
