Patriots reportedly plan to release 2024 4th-round pick Javon Baker
Baker lasted just one season in New England.
The Patriots are planning to release wide receiver Javon Baker, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Players who have less than four years experience go on waivers. Baker was a fourth-round pick in last year’s draft. There’s a chance he could return to the practice squad if he’s not picked up by another team.
It’s the second big cut of the day among the Patriots’ wide receiver group. New England is also releasing Kendrick Bourne, according to ESPN.
Baker generated headlines with a memorable quote after the Patriots picked him.
“Bring your popcorn. I make people in wheelchairs stand up,” Baker said in a 2024 video.
Baker recorded one catch on four targets, tallying 12 yards during his lone season with the Patriots.
He had one catch in three games during the preseason this year.
Baker’s athleticism led the Patriots to try to use him as a deep threat in practices, and he did come through with the occasional flashy catch.
But, there wasn’t enough consistency for him to stick as an everyday piece in New England’s offense.
He had been gaining traction on special teams during the preseason, but for now it looks like New England is heading in a different direction.
With Baker’s departure, the Patriots have just two players left from last year’s draft class on their active roster. Quarterback Drake Maye is expected to lead the offense. Caedan Wallace has moved around on the offensive line, but still has a spot on the team at the time of this posting.
All of the other players from last year’s class, besides Maye and Wallace, have been either cut, traded, or sidelined with a season-ending injury.
The Patriots have six receivers left on the roster following Baker’s release: Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins, and Efton Chism.
