Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is continuing to earn more respect across the league as one of the top defensive backs in the NFL.
The 23-year-old cornerback was ranked No. 84 overall in the NFL’s annual top 100 players ranking — with Gonzalez potentially standing as the lone New England player earning a spot on the list.

The annual rankings are compiled based on polling from NFL players — with a few established talents giving Gonzalez his flowers during the NFL’s video package.
“His smoothness and ability to get downhill on breaks, it seems like, even when he might not have a step, his closing speed is next level,” Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey said of Gonzalez.
Despite getting some recognition from his peers, the case can be made that Gonzalez should have been ranked even higher after establishing himself as one of the top cover corners in the league in 2024.
After showing plenty of promise as a rookie in 2023 before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury, Gonzalez was one of the few bright spots on the 2024 Patriots roster.
The No. 17 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft closed out last season with 59 total tackles, two interceptions, 11 pass deflections and one fumble recovery in 16 games. For his efforts, he was voted to the All-Pro Second Team.
Gonzalez is expected to be one of the leaders on a revamped Patriots defense under Mike Vrabel in 2025, with the Oregon product to team up with free-agent pickup Carlton Davis as the team’s two starting corners.
“Hopefully we can just play cat coverage — ‘You’ve got this cat, I’ve got this cat. And we can go to work,’” Vrabel said in March of Gonzalez and Davis working as a tandem. “I would say the thing I appreciate about watching CD is they might catch a ball on him, but he just lines back up and he competes and he challenges.
