Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs was in attendance at the organized team activities (OTAs) on Monday, marking his first official appearance since a video emerged showing him on a party boat holding a clear pouch containing an unidentified pink substance.
Diggs reportedly looked impressive, and is potentially ahead of schedule as he rehabs his way back following suffering a torn ACL in 2024. It may help to quiet some of the rumors that New England was already considering cutting the 31-year-old after only recently signing him to a three-year $63.5 million contract in March.
Part of the issue, as ESPN’s “NFL Live” comically explored during a discussion of the Patriots and Diggs on Monday, is trying to prove exactly what Diggs was holding.
“I checked with the NFL, they are declining comment on this matter,” explained NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler. “I checked with somebody with the Patriots. They said that this is sort of an elephant in the room. Everybody knows about it, but it’s not like they’re breaking down the tape in the front office going play-by-play with this things. They just sort of know it is what it is, and Mike Vrabel’s going to handle it. He’s expressed some disappointment publicly, so we’ll see if it results in any sort of discipline.
“It’s funny, I checked with a few teams, and they mentioned, ‘How do you police this?'” added Fowler. “How do you really know what that substance was? I mean it could be Fun Dip for all we know, but it’s just a hard thing to decipher.”
Fowler’s reference to the powdered candy (whose cherry flavor resembles a pink powder) drew laughs from his colleagues.
“It certainly could be, Jeremy,” joked former NFL general manager (and fellow NFL Live guest) Mike Tannenbaum. “But it may not be, either.”
Tannenbaum continued, adding on a more serious note that New England will be counting on Diggs regardless of the recent episode to improve its passing game.
“He’s critically important,” Tannenbaum said of Diggs. “I like [rookie wide receiver] Kyle Williams. I think he’s a really interesting receiver. Ja’Lynn Polk was certainly a disappointment last year, so was Javon Baker. So it’s Stefon Diggs and a whole bunch of question marks is what they have.”
“I would be surprised if he was cut on account of this,” Tannenbaum admitted. “But again, maybe there will be more facts [that emerge] later on.”
