The New England Patriots still have months to go before the 2025 NFL season officially gets underway.
But, expectations are rising in Foxborough following a busy offseason that saw New England hire Mike Vrabel as head coach and address several roster deficiencies via free agency and the NFL Draft.
The positive sentiment emanating from Patriots fans has also seemingly carried over to the rest of the league.
“This is the best offseason they’ve had in a while. I feel like they’re the Bills’ biggest threat,” one NFL scout with “ties to the AFC East” told ESPN’s Mike Reiss earlier this week.
“Look at the history of Vrabel’s teams — they’ll play hard and mirror his personality,” another scout told the longtime Patriots reporter.
On paper, the Patriots have accounted for several critical flaws on their roster this offseason.
Entering the spring with the most cap space in the NFL, the Patriots prioritized the defensive side of the ball during the initial flurry of free-agent signings. They inked DT Milton Williams to the largest contract in franchise history while also adding Harold Landry III, Carlton Davis, and Robert Spillane to the defense.
The return of Christian Barmore from blood-clotting issues also bodes well for the Patriots, especially if he slots in next to Williams on New England’s defensive line.
New England later added a potential WR1 in Stefon Diggs in free agency before signing a veteran right tackle in Morgan Moses.
During the 2025 NFL Draft, New England also added its potential franchise left tackle in Will Campbell (No. 4 overall) while adding several intriguing talents on offense in Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson (No. 38 overall), Washington State WR Kyle Williams (No. 69 overall), and Georgia C Jared Wilson (No. 95 overall).
Beyond that influx of talent, the presence of Vrabel and a revamped Patriots coaching staff that also features Josh McDaniels has been a welcome sight for a New England roster looking to take a step forward in 2025.
“The culture’s different here,” DeMario Douglas said after last week’s OTA practice at Gillette Stadium. “I love it. Vrabel’s a players’ coach, and he’s on the field with us. We’ve got a head coach that’s on the field with us, man. It’s different. You can tell he’s very in tune to what we’re doing and wants us to be better.”
“We love when the head coach is on the field and he knows both sides,” he added. “He knows what’s going on on offense and what’s going on on defense, and what needs to be done.”
