The Patriots are releasing linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, according to multiple reports.
Bentley posted a message on social media platform X thanking New England for his time with the franchise.
“New England Thank You for Everything It’s Been a Blessing,” Bentley wrote.
The Patriots drafted Bentley out of Purdue in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft. He was a rookie on the Patriots’ Super Bowl LII championship team.
The 6-foot-2, 250-pound linebacker posted 509 tackles, 10.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, and a pair of interceptions during seven seasons with the Patriots. The former Patriots captain posted 109 tackles or more in three of the last four seasons.
Bentley was sidelined with a season-ending pectoral injury two games into last season. He had all 12 of his tackles in the season-opening win against the Bengals.
The Patriots signed Robert Spillane, who made 158 tackles for the Readers last season during the offseason. New England also added linebacker Jack Gibbens who played for new coach Mike Vrabel in Tennessee.
Bentley, 28, was entering the final year of a two-year $13.4 million contract extension.
