Eliot Wolf’s thoughts on Stefon Diggs: The Patriots have been active so far in the offseason, but are yet to acquire the kind of No. 1 wide receiver that fans (and probably Drake Maye) have been clamoring for.
One of the players the team targeted as a potential free agent addition was Stefon Diggs, the 31-year-old four-time Pro Bowler.
Diggs is currently recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered in an Oct. game while playing for the Texans in 2024.
The former Bills star made a visit to Foxborough to check in with the Patriots in the past week, but left without agreeing to a deal. He is reportedly “ahead of schedule” in his recovery process, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
During a recent pre-draft event held with Patriots season ticket holders, team executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf was asked about Diggs’ visit to New England.
“Stefon, obviously, a really good player,” he told fans, according to MassLive’s Karen Guregian. “He was coming off an injury last year, so it was something we wanted to take a look and see where that was at.
“His agents, Adisa Bakari, Jeff Whitney, great guys, they do a great job,” Wolf added. “So, they’re people we always stay in contact with him, and other players.”
Wolf, obviously keeping his cards close to the vest at this point, offered no additional detail.
Prior to his 2024 season (limited to eight games due to the injury), Diggs was a metronome of consistent high production among wide receivers. From 2018-2023, he posted just one season with fewer than at least 100 receptions, and registered more than 1,000 receiving yards a year during that same time.
New England holds the fourth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and could look to strengthen the receiving corps there as well. Clearly, Wolf is keeping the Patriots’ options open regarding the possibility of adding Diggs (or someone else), though the window of opportunity to address the position is starting to close.
Trivia: Stefon Diggs set new Bills records for most catches and receiving yards in a season. What former Buffalo player previously held both of those records?
(Answer at the bottom).
Hint: He was a first-round pick in 1996, part of a particularly good wide receiver draft class that included 10 players who registered 500 or more career receptions.
