Are the Patriots reportedly getting closer to landing a proven playmaker for Drake Maye?
According to The Athletic’s Chad Graff, the Patriots are currently hosting free-agent receiver Stefon Diggs in hopes of signing the 31-year-old wideout to a contract.
Diggs’ value has taken a hit after suffering a torn ACL in October with the Houston Texans. But before that injury, Diggs had long-established himself as one of the top playmakers in the NFL, earning two All-Pro nods and posting six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before last year’s injury.
According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, the Patriots “will want to gather information on Diggs’ medicals as he recovers from a torn ACL” before potentially agreeing to a contract.
Even if Diggs may not be the same star talent he was during his prime years with the Vikings and Bills, he’d immediately vault himself to the top of New England’s depth chart at wide receiver this upcoming season — even if he may not be ready by Week 1.
Before suffering his knee injury with Houston, Diggs recorded 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns over eight games.
Prior to being traded to Houston last offseason, Diggs was one of the best receivers in the game — serving as Josh Allen’s No. 1 option during his four years with the Bills. Over his four seasons in Buffalo, Diggs recorded 445 catches for 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns.
Despite the concerns over Diggs’ health and what type of talent he is at this stage of his career, Diggs would be a welcome signing for a Patriots team that has failed to reel in proven pass-catchers like DK Metcalf, Cooper Kupp, Deebo Samuel, Chris Godwin, and Tee Higgins this offseason, be it in free agency or via trade.
New England has not had a wide receiver surpass 1,000 yards in a single season since Julian Edelman in 2019, with DeMario Douglas leading all Patriots wideouts in 2024 with 66 catches and 621 receiving yards.
Currently, New England’s wideout room is led by Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Kendrick Bourne, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Javon Baker.
