Former Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has landed a new job for the upcoming 2025 season.

The Los Angeles Rams announced several coaching hires on Monday, with Van Pelt joining Sean McVay’s staff as a senior offensive assistant. It stands as a sizable step down in the coaching hierarchy for Van Pelt, who helped run New England’s offense for one season in 2024.

Van Pelt has plenty of experience in the NFL coaching ranks. Before his one year in New England, Van Pelt was the Browns’ offensive coordinator and QB coach from 2020-23. He also served as the Bills’ OC during the 2009 season.

Van Pelt has served in some coaching capacity in the NFL since 2006. After four seasons with Buffalo, Van Pelt coached with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (QB coach, 2010-11), Green Bay Packers (running backs coach, 2012-13 and quarterbacks coach 2014-17) and the Cincinnati Bengals (quarterbacks coach 2018-19) before landing with Cleveland.

While Van Pelt had some experience as an offensive coordinator before his time in New England, the 2024 season marked the first time that Van Pelt served as a play-caller on offense.

Even though Van Pelt received plenty of praise from Drake Maye for helping in his development as a rookie, his conservative play-calling did draw some criticism during the 2024 season — including some choice words from then-head coach Jerod Mayo in December.

During New England’s lone season with Van Pelt in place as OC, the Patriots ranked 31st in yards and 30th in points.

Van Pelt was let go by New England shortly after the team made the call to fire Jerod Mayo less than two hours after the team’s final game of the season on Jan. 5.

New England’s offense will be overseen by Josh McDaniels in 2025, with the longtime coordinator set to return for his third stint with the Patriots.
