Another member of the Patriots‘ coaching staff from the 2024 season appears to have landed a new role elsewhere.

DeMarcus Covington, New England’s defensive coordinator under now-fired head coach Jerod Mayo, is reportedly set to head to the Packers as the team’s new defensive line coach. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky originally reported the news on Thursday morning.

“Contracts not signed yet but agreements in place. Deals should be finalized soon,” added Demovsky.

Covington, 35, had been with the Patriots since 2017, when he was hired to the staff as a coaching assistant. He then moved up to the chain to become outside linebackers coach in 2019, and the defensive line coach from 2020-2023.

Almost exactly one year ago in 2024, he was promoted to defensive coordinator by Mayo.

His one year running New England’s defense was, much like the rest of the team, a difficult season. After Bill Belichick’s departure, the defensive unit fell down the NFL rankings. Having finished 15th in points allowed and seventh in yards allowed in 2023, New England regressed in Covington’s season in charge (finishing 22nd in both yards and points allowed).

When Mike Vrabel’s new staff for the team was announced earlier in January, Covington was not retained (with Terrell Williams taking over as DC). Prior to that, Covington had reportedly interviewed with the Bengals for the team’s then-vacant defensive coordinator role per NFL Network’s Tom Pelisssero.

In addition to the Covington news, Demovsky also revealed that the Packers plan to promote Sean Mannion to be the team’s new quarterbacks coach.
