Tom Brady sets record straight about Nick Foles: ‘I don’t hate you’

"I’m just jealous of you. You caught it, I didn’t.”

Tom Brady will be on the call next month when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

Given the matchup, Brady will likely have to brace himself for several jabs and jokes at his expense — especially in regards to an Eagles squad that handed him a loss in Super Bowl LII.

Brady’s broadcast partner at Fox in Kevin Burkhardt didn’t wait very long to twist the knife against the former Patriots QB during Sunday’s broadcast of the NFC Championship Game between the Eagles and Commanders.

During the game, Fox cameras showed former Eagles QB Nick Foles taking in the game from a suite at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field — with Burkhardt not passing up the opportunity to call out New England’s championship loss to Foles in 2018.

“Nick Foles in the building,” Burkhardt said. “Super Bowl MVP that led to that Super Bowl win. Who did he play in that game? Do you know who he played that game?”

“Nick, I don’t hate you,” Brady responded. “I’m just jealous of you. You caught it, I didn’t.”

Brady’s retort makes several references to both the signal-caller’s presumed icy outlook toward Foles — as well as a pair of trick plays from Super Bowl LII that swung the momentum in that high-scoring, heavyweight bout.

While Brady has remained on good terms with several other top QBs that he’s battled with over the years, including the only other quarterback to hand him a loss in a Super Bowl in Eli Manning — Brady snubbed Foles in multiple post game handshakes over the years.

Along with not shaking Foles’ hands after the Eagles beat New England in Super Bowl LII, Brady ducked Foles in 2020 when Foles and the Chicago Bears beat the Buccaneers, 20-19.

“I try to be a good sport as best as I can,” Brady said of avoiding Foles when revisiting the handshakes in 2022. “I know it doesn’t always look like that because sometimes I get a little pissed out there, but for the most part, I try to be a good sport.”

As for the “catch” reference, Brady failed to reel in a reception off a trick play during Super Bowl LII. During a 3rd-and-5 play in the second quarter, New England dialed up a play where James White flipped the ball over to Danny Amendola, who tossed up the ball to a sprinting Brady down the field.

But Brady couldn’t reel in the catch, which could have put New England in the red zone. The Patriots went for it on fourth down, but Brady couldn’t complete a pass to Rob Gronkowski on the play, resulting in a turnover on downs. Foles and the Eagles went on to score on their next drive, giving them a 15-3 lead at the time.

Later in the second quarter, Foles and the Eagles reeled off the now infamous “Philly Special” — a trick play that ended with Foles catching a pass from Trey Burton in the end zone to give Philadelphia a 22-12 lead going into halftime.
